Public Services Department FAQs

  1. For the safety of the traveling public, Boone County Zoning Regulations prohibit any sign from being placed in any public right-of-way except publicly-owned signs such as traffic control signs.  Illegal signs will be removed and disposed of.

  2. A vehicle cannot be left unattended or inoperative on any city street or public right-of-way for a period of time longer than 24 hours.  To report a vehicle or report other on street parking violations contact the Boone County Public Safety Communications Center at (859) 371-1234.

  3. A Watershed is a region in which all land drains to a particular body of water or common point. It could be as small as your back yard or as large as any major river basin. The City Of Florence is located in three Watersheds - Gunpowder Creek, Banklick, and the Ohio River Watersheds

  4. Storm water that does not seep into the ground drains into a system of underground pipes and flows into our waterways.

  5. If you need to know where the sanitary sewers are because excavation work is being planned call Public Services Department at (859) 647-5416.

  6. Most sewer backups occur when the lines get clogged with debris. However, backups can occur for other reasons. The condition of the sanitary sewer system could be poor, natural conditions such as ground moving and a lot of rain. Also, when people misuse the system problems can occur.

  7. Yes. Some insurance policies will cover sewage backup cleanup and the cost of restoring and repairing or replacing damaged property. Your agent can provide you with more details.

  8. We will clean the sanitary main where the lateral ties into the main. This cleaning is done from manhole to manhole to insure that the main is clear and flowing fine.

  9. You should contact the City of Florence first, so we can help determine if it is our line or the homeowner’s line.

  10. It is important to become educated on the sewage overflow issue because every individual can play a role in helping to solve the problem. As a homeowner, you are responsible for the maintenance and repair of your house lateral, a pipe that connects your home to the public sewer system. A cracked or deteriorated lateral or one filled with tree roots can allow groundwater to seep into the system contributing to the problem. In addition you may be required to fix any improper connections, such as downspouts, driveway drains or sump pumps connected directly to the sewer system. The stormwater collected from these devices must be drained to your property or directly connected to a separate stormwater system.

  11. The program has evolved from leaf collection without a schedule to collection according to a daily schedule. Customers are now provided with three specific leaf collection dates for each street. Leaf collections are scheduled Mondays through Thursdays. Fridays are used as a make-up day, if necessary, and for equipment maintenance.

  12. The City of Florence puts out to bid an exclusive franchise to collect, transport and dispose of all solid waste in City limits.  This process locks in long term competitive rates for the customer and decreases traffic and wear and tear on City streets from refuse trucks.  This also allows the City to get involved with any service problems and ensure a satisfactory result is obtained.

  13. The City of Florence contracts with Rumpke for all residential, commercial, and industrial solid waste collection and disposal services for all customers in the City. Service must be set up with Rumpke by contacting them at (877) 786-7537. You will be billed directly from Rumpke for this service. Currently, the rate for residential trash service, one curbside pickup per week, is $4.06 ($3.91 base rate + $0.15 fuel surcharge) per month. One 96 gallon tote for garbage collection is provided to each household by Rumpke at no additional cost as part of this service. Additional totes can be rented from Rumpke for $1.75 per month per tote. Please contact Rumpke for commercial and industrial rates. Refer to Garbage and Recycling Schedule for residential curbside pickup day.

    A voluntary residential subscription recycling program is also available from Rumpke. This must also be set up with Rumpke by contacting them at (877) 786-7537. You will be billed directly from Rumpke for this service. Currently, the rate for residential recycling service, one curbside pickup per week, is $4.06 ($3.91 base rate + $0.15 fuel surcharge) per month. One 65 gallon tote for recycling collection is provided to each participating household by Rumpke at no additional cost as part of the service. Additional totes can be rented from Rumpke for $1.75 per month per tote. Commercial and industrial recycling is not included in the contract, but is available. Please contact Rumpke for commercial and industrial rates. Residential curbside pickup occurs on the same day as your trash pickup.

    A recycling center is located at the Public Services Maintenance Facility, 7850 Tanners Lane.  The center is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the front parking area.  The following items are acceptable: All plastic bottles and jugs regardless of plastic number including soda bottles, milk jugs, detergent bottles and small mouthed drink containers; aluminum and bi-metal beverage cans, steel/tin food cans and steel aerosol cans (empty w/tips removed); newspapers (including glossy inserts), magazines, telephone books, brown grocery bags, junk mail and mixed paper; corrugated cardboard (please flatten to preserve space) and clean pizza boxes; all colors of glass bottles and jars including clear, blue, brown and green.
    Large appliances are accepted for recycling during regular business hours only.

  15. An encroachment permit is required any time construction work will be conducted within the public right of way or easement. Encroachment permits may be obtained from Application for Encroachment

  16. The City does not establish handicap parking spaces on public streets.
