Citizen’s Police Academy
The Florence Police Department hosts an eight-week course each year (typically beginning in the spring) for citizens to learn first-hand how police officers perform their duties and how the department serves the community. The academy fosters better communication between citizens and police. The academy meets one night per week during the eight-week program from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at the Florence Government Center. Florence Community Band
The Florence Community Band is a group of volunteer musicians of all ages with various levels of musical experience who enjoy making music. All who wish to join the band are welcome; there are no auditions or fees to join. The band performs several times throughout the year at community events and in concerts open to the public. The City of Florence supports the Florence Community Band and practices are held each Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Florence Government Center. Florence Community Chorus
The Florence Community Chorus is a four-part men and women’s volunteer choral group that sings a variety of music and performs throughout the community. All who wish to join the chorus are welcome. The Student Ambassador program provides middle and high school-aged students with leadership opportunities in their home community. Ambassadors participate in city events and represent the city at various community activities. Ambassadors are selected through an application process. Application requirements include being a middle or high school student, a resident of Florence, and completing all the steps of the application process. Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS)
The Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) is a national program created by the U.S. Department of Justice and managed by the International Association of Police Chiefs. The Florence Police Department sponsors a VIPS program, with volunteers providing support and resources to the police department. Volunteers participate in several activities, including attending city events, providing tours to school groups, and assisting with limited administrative duties in the police department.
