The City of Florence, in partnership with the Simon Kenton Chapter Kentucky Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Boone County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, is proud to announce a ceremonial dedication in honor of Revolutionary War Veteran, Reverand William Carpenter Private William Carpenter, a valiant member of the Culpepper Militia who fought bravely alongside his father at the pivotal Battle of Yorktown.
Private Carpenter played a crucial role in the American Revolutionary War, witnessing the historic surrender of General Cornwallis in 1781. His commitment to the fight for freedom, alongside his father, exemplifies the bravery and dedication of the citizens who contributed to our nation’s independence.
After the war, he pursued theological studies and was ordained as a minister. In 1787, he became pastor of Hebron Lutheran Church located in Madison County, Virginia, serving until 1814. He then transitioned to become the pastor of Hopeful Lutheran Church in Boone County, Kentucky. He continued to fulfill his pastoral duties at this church until his passing in 1833.
The ceremony will feature the unveiling of a newly crafted headstone and Pomeroy Marker, which will honor William Carpenter's military and pastoral service and sacrifices. Community members, descendants of William Carpenter, and local officials are invited to attend this special event, which aims to commemorate our local history and recognize the contributions of our ancestors.
The event will feature speeches delivered by local historians, a color guard presentation by the Sons of the American Revolution, and the laying of wreaths by the Sons of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the American Revolution, along with other participating organizations. Please be aware that a musket demonstration will take place during the event.
Parking is available at the Florence Senior Center, located at 7431 US 42. Starting at 1:00 p.m., a TANK shuttle will transport passengers to 54 Circle Drive. After the event, the shuttle will return attendees to the Florence Senior Center.
