City of Florence to Host Rededication of the Boone County Veterans Memorial on August 23

08/11/2025

The City of Florence invites the community to join in honoring local service members at the rededication of the newly renovated Boone County Veterans Memorial on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will be held on the campus of the Florence Government Center, 8100 Ewing Boulevard, Florence, Kentucky.

The Boone County Veterans Memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and service of Boone County veterans. This year’s rededication is held in honor of H.B. Deatherage, whose leadership and advocacy brought the memorial to Florence. In 1995, the project gained early support from then-Mayor Evelyn Kalb, who dedicated a site at the Government Center to make the vision a reality.

The renovated memorial now features six fully lit flagpoles, black granite monuments etched with the names of 81 Boone County service members who gave their lives, and a surrounding ring of commemorative pavers recognizing veterans and supporters. The central area honors those lost in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the War on Terror. Additional granite memorials pay tribute to POW/MIA, Purple Heart Recipients, the Kentucky Veterans Hall of Fame, and include a memorial bench honoring Charles C. Fleek, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.

The rededication ceremony will feature patriotic music, the presentation and retiring of the colors, the National Anthem, remarks from local leaders, and a moment of reflection marked by the playing of Taps. Afterward, attendees are encouraged to visit the memorial site, located at the heart of the Government Center campus.

This event is free and open to the public. Veterans, families, and all members of the community are encouraged to attend in tribute to those who have sacrificed and those who continue to serve.
